THE NEWS FROM SHADES
Thanks!
spacer (1K)
Well, the results are in and it looks like we're going to be offering a pick-up parking space! I had a tremendous amount of responses, overwhelmingly saying you would like to utilize our Take-Away option if parking were provided. So, the signs are at the printers, and I will send out a special announcement (and maybe even a special 'offer') as soon as the pieces are in place. Thanks again for letting me know your opinions! Watch for the Special Announcement

NILLA!
spacer (1K)
Wow, 9 months, 80lbs, yes, 80lbs!
Well, Nilla and I have been on our own for the past week or so, and I'm afraid I've been so busy with that 'Sandwich Generation' stuff that Nilla has been left to her own devices far more often than is good for any of us! Oh, I should tell you about a couple of new things we've gotten for her. First the coolest dog toy on the planet 'Hide a Squirrel'. I cannot begin to tell you how much she likes this thing. It's a stuffed 'Tree' With 3 squirrels that you stuff inside of it and she has to get out. She loves it! Once she's managed to remove them, she carries them around the house in her mouth squeaking - all three at the same time. And while Jeff's been gone, she's decided that I'm lonely, so she's bringing them to me in the night. I've been waking up with a bed full of squirrels! (frighteningly God Fatheresque). I had to buy the 'Hide a Bee' too. Oh, and the Platypus and yes, the Hedgehog too (maybe you shouldn't mention this to Jeff!)
The second thing we got her was 'The Furminator' works like a charm- get one!

MICHELLE'S MEANDERINGS

A Recipe for the Sandwich Generation

First the sandwich; ubiquitous white bread spread with copious amounts of peanut butter and grape jelly. Place in a fold top (no ziplocks) plastic bag and insert into brown paper lunch bag BELOW a soda pop wrapped in aluminum foil. Add potato chips and a homemade chocolate chip cookie.
Place the lunch sack into a little box with 30 other identical lunch bags and store in a school bus for a minimum of 3 hours, where it will reach temperatures normally found only in the core of a nuclear reactor.
Now, sit cross-legged in the grass. Pull out the soda pop, unwrap the foil and pull the tab. Stop crying... the burn from the exploding liquid probably won't leave a scar. Next, remove the partially opened bag of potato chip dust and dump it directly into your mouth. Set the cookie pieces aside and watch the napkin blow away into the nearest environmentally sensitive marshland. Take out the sandwich (an oddly shaped mass, squishy, warm and purple, liberally coated with potato chip dust and broken pieces of cookie) and scarf it down like you haven't eaten for a month.
It's the first sandwich you've ever eaten that has been stored in your long term memory... it's perfect.

I've found this recipe has appeared in many different guises throughout my life.

As a memorable lunch for my school-age children's first field trip.

As a memory for my grandmother as we waited for the Nursing Home paperwork to be processed. One of her final field trips.

As the purple shadows under my eyes and the squishy, warm, oddly shaped mass around my middle proves, I'm a member of the Sandwich Generation, both literally and figuratively (get it? 'figure'atively, hahaha, gotta laugh when you can!) Finally, just one more thing about sandwiches...

Is it hot in here, or is it just me?

Odds & Ends

Hard to believe it's almost August. Where the heck has the sun been? Sheesh, anyway, I heard on the news that we're finally supposed to be breaking out of this 'marine layer' muck we've been stuck in for a month. Come down and catch a sunset with us to celebrate!

We just got in a new batch of OB hats, Aluminum Water Bottles and the cutest Dog Beach Bandanas, stop by and check them out. Also, as so many of you requested, we're finally able to sell our coffee by the pound. Just ask the hostess, and she'll set you up with a pound of fabulous French Roast, so you can take a little piece of Shades to enjoy at home.

Speaking of hostesses.. I have HUGE NEWS... The newest member of our management team is none other than BROOKE! We've been overwhelmed with great comments on Brooke's hostessing skills and demeanor, and Kylie was in desperate need of some help in the management of our complicated endeavor. We tried a few people from outside, and interviewed tons, but no one was the right fit to join our little family. Finally, we saw what was right under our nose, a young woman that is hardworking, friendly, and motivated. While Brooke is young and has much to learn, our fantastic staff has rallied around and is really working hard to help ensure Brooke's success. She is officially our 'Assistant Manager' and has been charged with improving the dinner experience and overall sales for that day-part. I'm sure she'd love your support, so if you'd like to help out, come in for dinner to help Brooke meet her first set of managerial goals.

I want to remind you all that our Sunshine Sangria continues it's  summer engagement for just one more month, so don't miss out!

Elsewhere in the newsletter, meet Nathan in our spotlight (I know, a lot of family lately, but Nate is only here for 2 more weeks so I have to squeeze him in while I can), and check in on Nilla's section to hear about her recent adventures.

Jeff is in Florida visiting his parents, so yet again, we are without a proof reader. Thanks for your understanding of my typos. Feel free to heap reproach on Jeff for subjecting you to my poor sentence structure.

As always...

SPOTLIGHT: NATHAN
spacer (1K)
This week, I'd like to introduce Nathan our 'Seasonal Specialist'.

Nathan comes to us each summer from beautiful Lake City Minnesota and I'm sure most of you will remember him from years gone by.

Nathan is entering his senior year of high school, and is trying to determine which college campus is worthy of his gifts. Due to be Class President, Nathan is carrying a tremendous load scholastically, while also being the defacto style icon entire population of young adults in his adopted home town.
His humor is surpassed only by his intellect and I personally will forgive him any misdeed with the possible exception of bringing another 'Mr. Bean' movie into my home.
A Facebook addict, award winner in competitive speech, loyal friend and all around good guy, We are overjoyed to spend yet another summer with this fabulous young man.

Who'll be next?
